HBP backs guide to Statutory Maternity Pay and Leave

HBP Systems are currently supporting a new book by author Alison Clarke. HBP believe this book, which is aimed primarily at small employers, will be an invaluable resource due to its detail and excellent use of plain english.

The book is divided into two main sections. The first looks purely at the employee’s rights to maternity leave and the second looks at the complexities of statutory maternity pay and how you should administer it.

In addition, it tells you about her rights at the ante-natal stage and the employer’s responsibilities in terms of health and safety requirements. There is also a step-by-step guide to take employers through the stages of a straightforward pregnancy.

This book tells you:

· what information you need from your employee and when you need it
· how to work out when she should return to work
· the difference between ordinary and additional maternity leave
· how to work out if she has earns enough for statutory maternity pay
· how to recover statutory maternity pay

It also tells you what to do if:

· the baby is born prematurely
· you employ casual or temporary staff
· the woman falls ill before or during maternity leave
· you have to make the woman redundant
· you make a mistake

The Institute of Payroll and Pensions Management said: “Alison Clarke's book provides a comprehensive yet easy to digest guide to SMP and leave. We would recommend all employers have a copy to hand"
